The rapper Cliff “Method Man” Smith has just been cast in the Shaft reboot. Yes you heard that right. A Shaft reboot. I’m not sure what film executive thought this was a good idea but nevertheless, it will be released on June 14th, 2019 and has come to be known as Son of Shaft.
Acting as a sort-of sequel, sort-of reboot it will be a follow up to the 2000 film Shaft starring Samuel L. Jackson which was a remake of the the 1971 film Shaft. Since it’s being reimagined as a comedic affair, New Line Cinema tapped Tim Story to direct a script by Kenya Barris (creator of Black-ish) and Alex Barnow (writer for The Goldbergs).
Smith will be playing an old friend of Shaft’s.
Smith is just the latest to be cast in this soft reboot of the series. He is set to join Samuel L. Jackson, who will be reprising his role as John Shaft. Jessie T. Usher, star of the 2016 film Independence Day: Resurgence, has been cast as Shaft’s son. Regina Hall has been cast as Shaft’s old flame and mother of his son.
I’m not sure how you can change the tone of Shaft and still make it work but we will see next summer.
