Erica Garner, 27 year old activist and mother of two small children, has been placed in a medically induced coma after a asthma-induced heart attack on Saturday night, reported as such by her mother. One of Erica’s co-workers have been giving updates via Erica’s twitter since Christmas Eve. On Tuesday morning, the co-worker tweeted that the New York City Police Department cleared the intensive care unit that Erica was staying in “without explanation.”
#NYPD cleared me out of the ICU leaving Erica BY HERSELF WITH NO EXPLANATION … We are at woodhull hospital. They are supposed to be bringing her out of her coma in less than an hour and the #NYPD cleared her support from the floor with no explanation.

A tweet then called for supporters to call Woodhull hospital in Brooklyn to “ask them ask them why the
#NYPD is keeping out Erica Garners explicitly permitted visitors minutes before bringing her out of her coma?!?!?” There was another update two hours later that they had been let back into the ICU. However, no more updates have followed regarding Garner’s condition.
Erica is the daughter of Eric Garner, a man who died in 2014 on Staten Island from an officer putting him into a lethal chokehold while being arrested for selling single, untaxed cigarettes. The officer was not indicted by the Staten Island jury, despite the medical examiner’s conclusion that Eric Garner’s death was homicide. Erica has turned his last words, “I can’t breathe,” into a protest chant in the fight against systemic racism across the whole of the United States. She has become a prominent member of the Black Lives Matter movement.
“Right now, the family is just praying and asking for everyone to keep her in their prayers,” Ms. Snipes, widow of Eric Garner and mother of Erica Garner, told the New York Times. Stay tuned.
