SZA has teamed up with Solange Knowles for her video for ‘The Weekend.’ SZA’s album CTRL landed at number two both on Rolling Stone’s 20 best RnB albums of 2017 as well as on BBC news’ best albums of 2017.
The video which dropped December 21 is CTRL’s newest visual, matching ‘The Weekend’’s sultry soft sound. SZA is shown dancing in empty, ordinary yet aesthetically pleasing locations such as a car garage, a dim art gallery, an abandoned space draped in plastic, and in front of a featureless building. The video starts and ends with subtitles in yellow, ‘one opted out / the imbalance of power, shifted the whole tide / it waved / and waved.’
In an interview with USA Today back in August, SZA talked about the upcoming collaboration, saying, “I love [Solange]. I think the universe is just bringing us closer to each other. That’s my homegirl.” Artsy, online magazine and art database, on December 22 has named Solange one of the 25 who defined visual culture in 2017 as “A pioneer who continues to merge art and popular culture” “[bringing] forth an affirming image of black pride and femininity.” This “affirming image of black pride and femininity” comes through in the visual for ‘The Weekend.’

Opinions on the video are varying, but, obviously, that only makes it more of a must-watch.
