This is bigger than sports. Colin Kaepernick and others like him have really stirred up a national conversation. After the continued support and silent protest on the part of various NFL players, many people have a say about watching the sport including Donald Trump. Don’t be fooled, this is only to take away from the initial cause for Kaepernick’s protest: the unjust killings of unarmed African-Americans.
See he urges people to boycott the NFL the same way Kaepernick supporters do but for a different reasoning. Now I’m not sure if it’s just me but the logic behind it makes no sense. Trump tweeted:
If NFL fans refuse to go to games until players stop disrespecting our Flag & Country, you will see change take place fast. Fire or suspend!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 24, 2017
How can you beg the league to “fire or suspend” players as a result of exercising a right that they, as American citizens, have? How is a silent protest disrespect to the flag? Does one disrespect meat by being vegan? A ridiculous question I know, but according to his logic, it’s valid.
In a recent speech in Alabama, he referred to players who silently protest as a “son of a bitch” and requested they’d be fired immediately. Of the 1,700 players in the NFL 1,200 of them are African-American. If they all protested there would be no NFL. Like I said before, this is bigger than sports. In a recent press day with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Lebron James was asked if he regretted calling Trump “a bum” and he stood firm. Watch the video here: https://content.jwplatform.com/previews/8bXAttQC?exp=1506408480&sig=fcd546909b8f8d3e1477c284f8396f75 I totally agree with Lebron. Trump doesn’t care about the impact his words have on the average citizen. He may not really understand the magnitude of his position. Until this day it sickens me that our “democracy” has actually allowed a man with no qualifications run the country. If anything we should be boycotting something else.
