Profesional NBA athlete Lebron James is not only a champion in the league, but he consistently scores off the court as well.
NBA superstar Lebron James along with his SpringHill Entertainment production company is adding their first scripted series to their roster. The series will be telling the story of the first black self-made millionaire, Madam CJ Walker. Acadamy-Award winner Octavia Spencer will be included in the project as well.
The series is based on the book “On Her Own Ground” written by Walkers great-granddaughter, A’Lelia Bundles, who will also be prominent in the production.
Variety reports that Zero Gravity Management’s Mark Holder and Christine Holder discovered the book from Bundles in 2016. Spencer was put on about the project and she aggressively pursued the part. Seriously, who better to play this role than Ms. Spencer. Once word got around that she would be playing the part of Madam CJ Walker — representatives of both James and Spencer pitched the series to James which got the ball rolling.
“I am really proud of this project and that SpringHill will be partnering with Octavia to tell this important story,” James said in a statement. “Every American should know the story of Madam C. J. Walker. She was an innovator, entrepreneur, social activist, and total game changer whose story has been left out of the history books. I hope this project lives up to her legacy with a story that will educate and inspire.”
The series is currently being shopped around. According to Variety, Netflix is interested and will most likely be the destination.
The untold stories of our black pioneers are an important subject to discuss. The admiration for both James and Spencer to bring the story of an African-American hero to television is real. Surely this will be a hit.
