We still feel your presence, just not in the physical. Sixteen years ago the iconic diva known as Aaliyah released her third and final studio album, titled Aaliyah.
The self-titled album was released just weeks before her tragic passing in The Bahamas. Upon initial release, Aaliyah debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200 album chart. This was the singer’s highest selling week of her career – racking in 187,000 album sales. Of course these numbers were long before digital copies and streaming services. Without a doubt she would’ve been a threat in this era. After her untimely death, the album took off to number one and stood there for weeks. The album is now certified 2x Platinum.
Notable tracks from Aaliyah include “We need a resolution,” “More Than a Woman,” “I Care 4 U,” and my personal favorite “Rock the Boat.” 90% of production came from record producer, Timbaland and lengedary female rapper Missy Elliot. The trio instantly became a force to be reckoned with. Their sound is still unsuccessfully trying to be duplicated today.
Although she is gone, her voice and style are still relevant. Aaliyah served looks and had a beautiful voice to match. Unfortunately her music catalog is not available on any streaming services due to an ongoing battle between her uncle and online retailers. Her uncle Barry Hankerson managed her career and refuses to release, any of her music.
Today we’re rocking this album from cover to cover one way or another. Listen below
