Kalief Browder was a 22-year-old young man which committed suicide in New York City’s Rikers Island while being detained in that facility. He was convicted of a crime he did not commit. This was learned years after his conviction, imprisonment, and eventual suicide. This story gained high profile media coverage and exposed the failed justice and prison system in the country. Akeem Browder, Kalief’s older brother wants to address these injustices in New York City along with other issues that impact New York City. Akeem plans to run for mayor of New York City. He will run under the Green political party. Some of the issues in his platform include prison reform and homelessness.
